Hey y’all – I’ve got another sewing book review for you today – and a giveaway! I was super excited to get Create the Perfect Fit (affiliate link) sent to me, and I recommend this as a fitting book. Let’s get more into the details of why I like it.
First, as I said above, I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my review. I met Joi (the author) back at the Common Threads event I attended last summer. She was such a fun, knowledgeable personality that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on her book. Joi was a tailor for many years, so her experience with fitting comes from altering clothing to fit hundreds of bodies before she began to teach others how to drape and fit.

And I was not disappointed. I have written about other fit books that I enjoyed, but I think this one is my new favorite. Why?
I love the binding – it’s spiral bound, so it lays open nicely on your sewing table while you reference it.
Next, most of the alterations are done with measurements on the pattern, instead of having to sew a muslin and go from there. I like this a lot as it helps you decrease the number of muslins you have to do to make sure you’ve got everything right. Plus, the photos and illustrations to check and refine each area of the pattern are super clear.
Also, the end of this book has a selection of real women – friends and students of Joi – and shows how to address their individual fit issues. Super informative!
Joi has also recently released a few of her own patterns with McCall’s and those are the perfect place to practice her techniques – she includes fitting instructions and markers above and beyond what the typical commercial pattern includes.
My one criticism of this book is that pants are only covered in a partial page. But maybe that will be book 2?

Looks like an awesome addition to my sewing library! Fit is the most important part of feeling good about your hand-crafted creations! I would absolutely love to have this reference book!

I appreciate ‘how-to’ books with spiral bindings that lay flat. The idea of fitting adjustments done by pattern measurements to reduce muslins sound like a great idea to me. I’d love this to be my first ‘fitting’ book. Thanks for the opportunity!
Paula
wow this would be a great book for me to learn how to alter my clothing

Great review. I so want a copy of this book. Adjusting patterns is one thing that keeps people from attempting garment seeing.
