Well, I’ve hit a stall with my last living room project – I need help from the Hubs, and he is currently in football season, which means he has no time to help. Boo. So instead of finishing up, I decided to share how to make a hearth guard like the one we have on our fireplace, since I’ve actually gotten a few emails about it.
This is a pretty simple project, and it’s totally a no sew.
Hopefully you can see in the pictures how we did this – it was built before I started blogging, so I don’t have pictures of the process. But first we laid out a frame of 1×3″ lumber along the top of the fireplace hearth. We used 2 boards at each corner, then laid boards on their sides around the bottom edge of the hearth, so the sides were flush against the brick, and then laid boards around the top to create a lip that covers the top corner.
We used 1 twin size egg crate mattress topper, folded over double, and stapled it to the wood frame, then pulled fabric over that, stapling from the center front out. At the corners I folded the fabric into a mitre, and then we continued stapling.
The hearth guard just slides over the fireplace. The cost was less than $40 for the materials for the whole project, and it’s kept two boys from splitting their heads open on the brick, so I call that $40 well spent.

Thank you so much for posting this!

Thank you. This is a great solution for our 10ft wide 2ft tall hearth of flag stone. I didn’t even know where to start on it. This will be so much nicer than our make shift collection of moving boxes, baby gate and papasan cushion that I was beginning to think I would have to look at for 2 more years.
