These tips and trick just make sense to have in your sewing room
Hey y’all, today I’m sharing some things in sewing that just make sense. All of these things in my sewing room help make my sewing easier, more organized, and cleaner. Sewing is more of a job than a hobby for me, and my sewing space attaches to my bedroom (the blue wall side below is my bedroom), so organized and clean are important.
So whether you’re a beginner or sewing your hundredth garment, I hope you find something in this post that makes sense for your own sewing space.
You can see a short overview of the things that help me below or on YouTube here. Check below the video for more details on each one as well as product links if you’re interested.

Measuring Tape on Cutting Table
My cutting table is a DIY job. I took two IKEA shelves and added their brand of casters to each. Then I cut down a piece of melamine down to size and added it as the top. I added edge banding around the sides of the melamine and brackets underneath to hold it in place. And finally, I glued a measuring tape to the front edge of my table. It not only helps me measure yardage, I can measure pattern pieces as I cut them out. It’s like a ruler I don’t have to reach for as I work at the table.
Thread Catchers
From the little me made tray that catches the fabric trimmed by the serger blade, to an actual sand bucket that sits under my sewing machine, I have plenty of places to throw thread. This helps keep it off my floor, and out of the rolling wheels on my sewing and desk chairs. Even after years of using the rolling chair in the sewing room, I have only once had to clean threads/lint out of the wheels because they were sticking.
Hanging Rulers and Cutting Mats
I’m not sure what the previous owners of my house had hanging in what I use as my fabric closet, but it turned out that they left screws perfectly spaced for me to hang my cutting mat and rulers. This keeps them easily accessible but out of the way. I can grab my French curve ruler when I’m drafting a sewing pattern, or my cutting mat and quilting ruler to use with my rotary cutter and quickly cut rectangles or squares.
Cord Keepers
I also mounted my surge protecter that my most of machines are plugged into on the wall. Then I used cord keepers to wrap up the power cords and keep them off the floor. This makes it easier to vacuum under my sewing table, which helps keep lint and threads at bay.
The cord keepers are easy to sew from scraps, and I have a tutorial and free pattern to make them. Check it out here.
Magnetic Knife Bar
I keep this magnetic knife holder (affiliate link) mounted right behind my sewing machine. That way I can grab scissors if I need them. It’s also a convenient place to put pins when I pull them while sewing a seam. I also store a few hand sewing needles, a seam ripper and my pin tin on the bar. That way I don’t have to get up if I need to remove any stitches or trim threads. I also don’t have to worry about knocking any notions off my sewing table.
If you’d like to further explore the room where I sew my own clothes and create the sewing projects and pattern instructions I share here, check out this full tour of my studio. You can see more about my rack for my thread spools, where my textiles live, and how I store my buttons and zippers, among other things.

Love the measuring tape around the outside of the table, hanging the cutting mats and rules! Thanks for the ideas!
