I finally finished a garment! But those of you who guessed any more than 1 yesterday were giving me more credit that I deserved – this is the only pair that got done. I have a mini-tutorial today on how to sew patch pockets.
I did get a few steps done on all the other pairs – they all have the pocket linings, fly shields and back center seams sewn. I was humming along assembly line style then I realized that if I didn’t focus on one pair, I would once again not have a finished garment at the end of the hour. So I chose this pair, because I knew I wouldn’t have to hem them since I was using existing hems. These are upcycled from the bottom half of the jeans I used in this post.
The Clean Slate Pants pattern that I used for these shorts (the pattern has short and capri lengths marked on it) are designed with welt pockets in the back. And I love welt pockets. But for these I wanted to do patch pockets. So I cut some out and have a mini tutorial below. You can also download the pattern piece I used here; this worked on the size 5 shorts I sewed, though you may want to enlarge it slightly for the larger sizes and shrink it slightly for smaller sizes.
Start by pressing the top edge about 1/4″ to the wrong side (left). Then fold that 1/2″ to the right side and sew it down, 1/2″ from each side edge. (Note: I never finish the raw edges of my pockets. I’m lazy like that. But if you wanted to have them finished, do that before this step).
Turn the top of the pocket to the wrong side, pressing out corners. Fold under sides of pocket, press. Fold up bottom edges of pocket and press. Topstitch top edge of pocket so the hem stays in place.
Pin the pocket onto the shorts, and topstitch in place around 3 sides, making sure to backstitch at beginning and end.
Tip: I use upholstery thread when sewing denim. With the longest stitch my machine will do, this looks like denim thread, but it doesn’t give my machine fits like cotton denim thread does.
And them finish up your shorts so you can admire your pockets on a cutie booty.

I was pretty sure you would be able to sew all 4 of them, I was wrong, you’re not Wonder Woman!!!

Hey, none of us are “real” superheroes, although we may play one every day.

Don’t feel bad, you’re in good company. I haven’t finished half as much as i have hoped to and I still need to produce an outfit for a birthday party and whip out some gifts. Guess i will be burning the midnight oil.
