Today is the first day of school around here. And in celebration, I thought I’d make a zip pouch or three (expect to see more of these – I’ve been scrap busting lately). After years of being a student and years of teaching and buying supplies for my classroom, I just love school supplies, so you can see where I got my inspiration for these pouches.
The crayon box inspired pouch was the easiest one – I made the main part out of scraps left over from this zipper pouch. I had some dark green felt (not sure what I had that from) that I used and sewed on top of the yellow fabric. I repeated the same pattern on the front and back.
Next was the marker inspired pouch – this one was from leftover twill.
This is how I appliqued the “cap” on the pouch – just sewed it wrong side up and then folded it and pressed. The other raw edges got sewed into the pouch seams.
The two stripes are single fold bias tape that I topstitched on.
To replicate the wavy lines inside the stripes I used one of the decorative stitches on my machine.
These two sewed up really fast. The third, the notebook/pencil pouch took a little longer because of the surprise on the back.

The peek-a-boo pouch is what I have in mind to use with some of my vinyl. Looking forward to your tutorial tomorrow since I’ve never sewn with vinyl before! I am assuming it’s a lot like sewing with laminate though…

How cool! It makes me think about when my son was younger and going back to school. I remember cutting off those uniform pant legs that he so meticulously put holes in at the knees, and making him the coolest shorts, that he could wear when the weather was warmer just before school was out. And making him hats, scarves and hoodies with his name embroidered on them. I really enjoyed doing all of that. And I think your kids are loving the different, personal touches that you give to their school supplies. I loved the whole school supply thing, too. Great job.
