Hi, I’m Melissa the writer, teacher and designer around here. You can contact me at mellysews(at)gmail.com
(I don’t actually go by Melly; it just sounded better with “sews” – Mel-lis-sa = mel-ly-sews, get it? Or not, it’s too late to change the blog name now at any rate).
MELLY SEWS – DREAM, LEARN, MAKE.
DREAM – Have you ever something in mind, then been unable to find the pattern/fabric/something else you needed to realize your vision?
LEARN – Maybe you had the materials, but needed to brush up on a skill or technique?
MAKE – Make exactly what you want, and find joy in the creative process.
There’s a Shel Silverstein poem (“Invitation”)that I’ve always loved that begins, “If you are a dreamer, come in.” If you are a dreamer looking to make the clothes in your head into reality, you’re in the right place.
This blog is an ever-growing collection of teachings through projects, patterns, sharing and inspiration to get the things you want to make out of your head and into closets and homes.
The best part for you? I was a high school teacher for 12 years – which means I have thousands of hours of both planning and teaching under my belt, which translates into easy-to-follow tutorials for you to learn to sew.
So whether you’re a dreamer looking for a place to start, a sewist looking to learn, or advanced designer looking to manifest your sewing designs into products for customers, you are in the right place. Because I’ve been all of those, and now I’m here to help you over the road bumps. Check out these popular posts – I bet you’ll learn something! (Click on any picture to go to the post)
From beginning sewer to pattern designer, sewing and teaching sewing has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. In addition to writing this blog, I am the independent pattern designer behind Blank Slate Patterns, where you can find great patterns to launch your creativity. I am also one of the four designers behind Pattern Anthology, where we create coordinated collections of sewing patterns sold together during two week events.
More about me:
For several years as a child I refused to wear anything but pink dresses. My mom finally talked me into some pink pants in second grade.
And then I had kids. So my life now is about sewing in the intersection of ruffles and race cars. Running a business and being a mom. Chasing after the dream of balance. Learning how to get close. Making up life as we go along.
I’m mom to two boys who go by the nicknames Tater and Bean, wife to a Texas high school football coach, and a former theatre teacher. Besides sewing, I love acting, reading, writing, directing, and riding horses.
