Sew in Tune – Even if It Breaks Your Heart

Sew in Tune - Even if it Breaks Your Heart - Music inspired Sewing -

Today is the beginning of Sew in Tune – yay! Sew in Tune is the annual event hosted by myself and Stacey of Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy! where we and our guest bloggers sew up looks inspired by music. So I’m kicking off this year’s series with my look – Even if it Breaks Your Heart.

I’m a little bit country, y’all, so this time I was inspired by a band out of my home state of Texas.

And I thought I’d sew a Texas Tuxedo – which is what we call it when a man wears a tuxedo jacket with his jeans and boots.

Straight leg jeans, henley t-shirt and tuxedo jacket - a Texas Tuxedo -

The jacket is my Berkshire Blazer. I sewed it in crepe suiting fabric and cut the front facing out of satin to give the lapels that formal look.

But I love the pairing of high and low fashion, so under the very formal blazer I put a henley t-shirt, and Tater is sporting mom-made jeans.

To make the jeans I started with my Coastal Cargos pattern. I chose this one for straight legs that would fit over boots, and I added a jeans yoke and patch pockets to the back (tutorial here). This is a super easy alteration to make. Simply draw your line for the yoke, cut the pattern apart, and add seam allowances where you cut. For reference, I measured down 2 1/2″ on the longer side of the yoke and 1 1/2″ on the shorter side.

“So I would stand out on the sidewalk, listening to the music playing every Friday night.”

I made Tater a raglan henley t-shirt to go under his jacket, mostly because he has suddenly grown a few inches in his arms and legs and nowhere else. I purposely made the sleeves a little long so hopefully they won’t be too short until we get back to short sleeve weather.

On the pocket I used my embroidery machine to add this icon. I bought the design here and just didn’t stitch out the “brothers” part when I did it.

The raglan was self drafted, and I don’t have a pattern for it available. If you’re interested in your own, you can follow this tutorial to add a placket to any raglan t-shirt pattern.

Oh my, Melissa. I hope you and your husband are ready to beat the girls back when he gets older. The kid is ca-ute. And what a great look on him. Fits your little Texan perfectly and I’m thinking every little boy need a Texas Tuxedo in his closet!

I love this! Great song, amazing band! I live in Dallas and went to college in Denton, so I’ve seen my fair share of their shows live over the years. He looks great in his Texas tuxedo. :) Great job on the ensemble. You did such a great job on the jeans! I may need to tackle a pair soon.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G . . .”Texas Tuxedo” for your son! Highlighted with a satin rounded collar, your black Berkshire Jacket is FAB of crepe suiting fabric. Jacket is paired with denim jeans and a casual white & grey shirt with raglan sleeves. Detail on the chest pocket: ROCK with a guitar for the “O” & a small red heart is so clever– I love it! Entire outfit reveals all the LOVE you’ve sewn into it! Excellent designs and sewing, Melissa. Sarah Helene in Minneapolis
