Great Gift to Sew – Make a Purse Package for Kleenex

Hey y’all – welcome to November where the theme here is Holidays! In keeping with that theme, I’ve got a scrapbuster type gift that’s practical and useful too – a tutorial to sew a travel size tissue holder. These are super easy to make, and you only need these supplies:
- 6 1/4 inch by 7 1/4 inch scrap of woven fabric
- mini braided hair elastic (affiliate link) or a small piece of 1/4 inch wide elastic
- button
- pinking shears or fray check (affiliate links)
I’ve got a video tutorial for these tissue holders below, or you can scroll past the video to read the instructions. And if the video won’t load for some reason you can also watch on YouTube here.
To start, pink the short edges of the fabric to finish it. You could also apply fray check if you don’t have pinking shears. Then press the edges 1/4 inch to the wrong side and stitch.

Center the hair tie on one side of the fabric, folding the pinked edge under. Stitch and back stitch over the hair tie to secure it in place, making sure to match the loop extending beyond the fabric with the size of your button.
Mark 1 1/4 inches from each edge on the fabric, then fold it right sides together and sew to that mark, back stitching at the inner point of the seam. Press the folded edge to crease it.

Fold the fabric so that the opening and seams are centered against the crease line, then stitch across the top and bottom edges. Press the side edges. Pink the top and bottom seam allowances. Snip the seam allowances at the corners to the stitching lines.
Box the corners by opening the seam allowances and then pinching each corner to align the seam with the side crease mark. Mark a 3/4 inch long line at each corner and then stitch across each corner.

Turn the holder right side out and hand stitch the button in place. Then fill with the tissues from a travel size package.

OMG!! So seriously cute!!! Now to have someone make a full size box car tissue holder that doesn’t get demolished day one when the kids step on it…. Hmmm, maybe something like this in heavy denim?…..that velcroes open on one end so the box slides in? Now you’ve got me thinking….!

These are cute! I like having the little holder loop on it. These are fun to give along w cough drops, tea packets,Emergen-C, and other little things packed into a cheery mug or bag for friends that are under the weather.

Turned out a really cute little project. At first I misunderstood the box corner measurement and my tissue holder was really small. Corrected my mistake it’s perfect now and I also know how to make a smaller taller little box too!

Thank you for this pattern! A girlfriend of mine gave me a tissue holder like this a few months back as a gift. She bought it from a craft show. It is at the ready in my purse every day. Now I will be able to make some for my daughters, relatives and friends.
