ReInventions – Wrap Sweater

January 23, 2012 by Melissa Mora 10 Comments

Second to last ReInvention of this series, wow! I can’t believe that stack of stuff to reinvent is almost gone.

This is what I started with this time – a Land’s End fine gauge cardigan from the thrift store in a size Large.

First I took off all the buttons, then I chopped off the sleeves and slit up the side seams

Then I turned the sleeves inside out, marked them based on a sweater that fit well, and took them in a whole bunch by sewing on my line.

I cut the back of the sweater down to size the same way.  Then I folded the fronts together by matching the shoulder seams and cut off the crew neck into a deep V.

I sewed the side seams back together – so the back was now my size, but the fronts were still as wide as the size large. Then I took some 2 inch satin ribbon and ironed it in half.

On one end, I snipped the fold about 1/2 an inch, then folded in the ends inside at about a 45 degree angle and pressed.

I sandwiched the sweater between the ribbon and pinned around the neckline (you can see the angled piece in the bottom of the picture below) and all the way to the bottom of the sweater. I stitched it in place very close the the edge.

And then tied the rest of the satin ribbon around my waist. I secured the ribbon with a couple stitches at the waistline on the seam on the right side.

Great work using satin ribbon as bias tape; my own attempts always flop. I love the color and the cut of this sweater.
