If there is one thing I’m grateful for from my pregnancies, it’s that I was not hugely pregnant during the summer. Hats off to anyone who was or is going to be! Hopefully the outfit I’m sharing today will help keep you as cool and comfortable as possible if you got a summer due date. So let’s talk about how to sew maternity shorts.

Paired with a Blanc Tshirt (which I’ll talk more about on Friday) these shorts are lightweight chambray and they have pockets! I am so excited for my former student who is a first time mommy and modeled for me. Though this also makes me feel ooooold.

Want to make your own? You’ll need:
- 1 yard of fabric. I used this chambray (affiliate link)
- the Lace Chambray Shorts pattern
- at least 2 yards of crochet lace. This one (affiliate link) is similar to what I used.
- 1/2 yard of knit fabric, I used this knit (affiliate link)
To modify the pattern, first cut 2 inches off the top of the shorts. You won’t use the waistband piece, instead, you’ll cut waistband pieces from the knit fabric. Cut one that is 16 inches wide by 14 inches tall for the back, then one that is 18 inches wide by 14 inches tall for the front (adjust these measurements if you graded the pattern up from its original size).

Place the two waistband pieces right sides together and stitch the side seams.
Construct the shorts following the Lace Chambray Shorts tutorial, but don’t attach the waistband. Instead, follow these instructions to make a yoga waistband. Match the side seams of your knit waistband to the side seams of your shorts and stretch the band as you attach it so that it is flat against the shorts.

And done! Now fold the waistband up or down, whichever you prefer, add a tshirt or tank top, and then stay in the air conditioning as much as possible.
