Make thumbhole sleeves and help keep your hands warm with thumbhole cuffs

Hey y’all, this month is going to be about hacks to my popular hoodie pattern. Today I’m going to show you how to sew thumbhole cuffs on a shirt. This can be done with any top sewn in stretch fabric that you can add cuffs to. So in addition to the sweatshirt as shown above, I also sewed myself an Abrazo T-shirt with these cuffs in athletic knit as shown below.

While I had it on with jeans for these photos, I actually really like it for running so I mostly wear that top with running shorts or leggings.

Sleeves with thumbholes look simple, but actually take a few steps if you want to avoid visible topstitching, and this is one of the cases where I am glad we live in an era of video tutorials, because it’s much easier to show how to sew these in a video than in photos. So check out the video below or on YouTube here.
When you’re finished, enjoy your warm hands and the coziness of thumbhole cuffs in your shirt! I admit, I was not previously a thumbhole fan, but I may have changed my mind after sewing the samples for this tutorial. I am especially surprised by how often I chose the running shirt with thumbholes.

Thank you so much for this excellent video! It would have been hard to understand if written out. I have a merino wool long underwear top I wear as a shirt on its’ own that has thumbhole cuffs and love them for outdoors or cold houses but putting them on a nice looking top is better,. I will try it on my next make.

Thank you so much for the excellent video. My daughter requested thumbhole cuffs on a knit pj top I was making for her, and thanks to your video I was able to add them. The instructions were really clear, and thorough, without being overly lengthy to watch. Wonderful work!
