Add an asymmetrical button collar to a shirt to make this button cowl sweatshirt

Hey y’all, today I’m sharing the third hack to my free hoodie pattern and showing you how to dress it up by sewing this asymmetrical button collar sweatshirt version. I’ve seen variations on this button cowl look and was inspired to create my own. It’s also easier to do that you might think, and the best part is it’s still a cozy, comfy sweatshirt.

This is sewn in a French terry with a lot of drape but not a lot of stretch. I used the loopy side as the right side, because I like the color of it. The smooth side of this fabric is a dark heathered charcoal color.

To see how to sew this button collar, watch the video below or on YouTube here.
So as you can see from the video, this hack is almost the same process as the drawstring cowl hack, it’s just that you don’t sew it into a tube. Different fabrics and different necklines give these two sweatshirts totally different styles.

I think it’s so fun how the same shapes in patterns can look totally different depending on how they’re finished. And if you really wanted to actually button this collar for warmth, you could, though I skipped sewing the button holes.

Thanks so much, Melly! This is exactly what I was looking for. I don’t usually like videos for learning something, but yours are paced exactly right for me.

Scrolling through your website, I am so excited to make your projects. I am so new to sewing, this sweatshirt will be a future project, but gosh, it looks super fun and you’ve got a great manner of teaching.
