See my modern and colorful holiday home decor on this Christmas home tour

Hey y’all, many of you who follow on Instagram know that we moved into a new house earlier this year. I have not done a full home tour anywhere, but since I got all our Christmas decor up I though it would be fun to do a holiday home tour today. I’m excited to show you a little bit of the interior I’ve been working on since we moved in.

I did a video of our Christmas decor so you could take a peek into our home. You can watch it below or on YouTube here if it won’t load below for some reason.
Over the last several years, I’ve slowly moved toward holiday decor that fits into our regular decor/colors naturally. That means there’s not a lot of red in sight in my house. Red is not a color I’ve ever loved, especially not in big doses. Since I decided to get a taller Christmas tree for our high ceilinged living room, and also embraced totally non traditional Christmas colors. My Christmas tree (affiliate link)is now decked out in blue, pink, teal, silver and aqua. I love how a tree in these colors makes my turquoise ottomans look right at home.

I also sewed up some quick pillow covers to match the colors I used on the tree. The joy and large graphic snowflake pillows were embellished with heat transfer vinyl, and the embroidered one was done with my embroidery machine (affiliate link). I just chose a snowflake pattern that came with my machine and embroidered it in all the thread colors I had that matched the tree colors.

The poinsettia I bought needed just a little more height to look balanced, so I asked the Coach if he could make me a simple plant stand. I love what he made so much that I want another for the plant I have on the front porch! Tip for the poinsettia – I took the gold foil pot cover that the plant came with and just turned it inside out to show the silver side, to better match the rest of my Christmas decorations. And these Christmas stockings that I made last year fit right in with the rest of the decor; they match this house like they were made for it.

In the kitchen, I like to keep things simple. A little holiday tablescape perks up our kitchen island. I staged my Nativity set on a cake plate I picked up second hand and I added quilt batting snow and bottle brush trees.
I also made an ornament swag from a garland of ornaments – I just doubled it back on itself and wired the two halves together using floral wire. Then I wired it to the cabinet pulls of the cabinet above our stove. This is an empty cabinet so we don’t ever open it, otherwise I’d have had to figure out a different way to secure the swag.

Love your look! Can’t wait to get back home after a week away and start decorating our home… My colours are the traditional ones of green, red, and cream with a little change up every year and a few new touches. Hopefully,I’ll get my new quilt quilted by Christmas!

Love the ornament swag over the stove hood. I do use the cabinets over the stove but I bet I can move the stuff there to make this work – it’d be easier to do that than figure out a better way to attach it. Thanks for the tour and the ideas!

Hi Melly
Thankyou so much for the tour of your beautiful home. I only have a one-bedroom flat. Nevertheless you have inspired me to make the most of my space and I can’t wait to put the decorations up.
I have Altzheimers disease, though mild I’m glad to say, and have been able to follow some of your projects as you are such a brilliant tutor, with your easy to follow instructions.
I had given up on sewing and quilting since the diagnosis. i.e. until I came across ‘Melly Sews”.
God bless you Melly
Kind regards

Your colors are gorgeous. I’ve always been a fan of blue tones at Christmas, but then my home is mostly blue too. I think a lot of us that own embroidery machines often forget to check out the wonderful built in designs that are so quick and easy to use. The way you have done the snowflake pillow on just a simple white background is perfect.
Out of curiosity, which cutting machine system do you have? I’d love to learn more about using them.

Your color choices are fantastic. The place looks beautiful and celebratory, ready for a party!
