Here’s the sundress I couldn’t wait to share with you! It’s modern, nautical looking and definitely ready to be worn all summer long! Want to make one for yourself? That’s what I thought!
When Melissa asked me to be part of her sundress series, so many dress ideas started floating around in my mind. I LOVE dresses – drawing them, designing them, sewing them and wearing them. My inspiration wall in my sewing studio is filled with new dress ideas, so it was difficult to choose which one I would create. But I had my eye on chevron fabrics for quite some time and I knew I wanted to use one for this sewing project. I laid my navy blue chevron print (by Blake Riley) on my sewing table and just waited for the perfect idea to come to me. It finally did!! My husband had cleaned out his work shirts a while back and of course I added them to my fabric stash. (Does your pile up, too??) I used a light blue button down shirt of his and the navy chevron fabric to create this sassy sundress.
I used my Seamingly Smitten sewing pattern, The Women’s Ruffled Tunic, to make this sundress. I cut out the tunic fabric as the pattern said to do (using the chevron fabric.) Next I laid out my husband’s dress shirt and cut off a 10 inch long x the width of the shirt section.
I cut up the back of his shirt so I could lay it open. I pinned the shirt fabric to chevron fabric, cut them to the same width.
Whenever you buy a sewing pattern, think outside the box! Try to envision it as other pieces of clothing. A tunic can usually become a dress (just add some length and make it longer). A dress can be made in various lengths – you can shorten it, lengthen it, make it into a maxi dress, change the top by adding straps, sleeves or halter straps. Especially if you feel shy about wearing something sleeveless, add some straps. It will hold the dress up and you will feel more comfortable wearing it. Or, simply sew it, love it and throw on a cardigan when you want more coverage.
If you want to sew a dress like this for yourself, you can get The Women’s Ruffled Tunic pattern on our brand new website. All sewing patterns are INSTANT DOWNLOAD! No waiting around.
