In June we vacationed in California for a couple weeks, and a couple weeks before we left I decided that I wanted to do a pattern collection. And photograph it in California. So, today I present to you the first of the California Dreaming patterns, the Catalina Dress.
This dress is an easy sew, with multiple options. You can do a tank top style or a cap sleeve, and you can use knits or woven fabrics.
I have been living in these dresses since I sewed them. The drawstring elastic waist gives a little definition (and helps hold up the weight of a maxi skirt) while remaining comfortable. In fact one of my testers jokingly suggested naming this the Taco Truck Tank Dress, because you could eat a lot from the taco truck and not feel uncomfortable in this dress.
So get your Catalina Dress today. You can read more about it and purchase it in the shop here.
Some tester versions - love the colorblocking on this one.
And I totally want to be on the beach in this dress!

Wow, these dresses are very pretty and they look so cool and comfortable. You could wear them out to shop and afterwards to a restaurant for coffee and lunch, and if you were going out in the evening, you could dress them up a little differently and do something a little more dressy-casual. I really like these patterns. These would definitely work for me, I’m thinking, “I should give them a try.”

I love the dress! Where did that beautiful fabric come from?
Melissa Mora
The floral print was from the LA fabric district, the metallic stripes from a local shop. I don’t think either is available online.

I LOVE this! What type of fabric did you use for the maxi version? Is it knit jersey or something else? It drapes beautifully. 🙂
Melissa Mora
It’s a knit jersey; I’m pretty sure it’s got some rayon in it because it’s very stretchy and drapes a lot more than 100% cotton.
