Hello everybody! Sylvia from The Ravel Out here with you today. Fall has arrived and I am so excited to share my new project with you.
Early fall is always a tricky time in terms of figuring out what to wear. It’s too warm to bring out the winter jackets but too cold to wear summer dresses. Luckily I live on an island and can stretch out my summer clothes a little longer. I decided to hack the Tillery Skirt (aff link) since it will be easy to pair it with a long sleeved top and tights once it is too cold. For now, I have paired it with my Shoreline Boatneck top (aff link) and I love it!
The Pattern
The Tillery Skirt is a very simple pattern. My favourite things about it are:
- It is a very quick sew for intermediate and advanced sewers and a good little challenge for beginners.
- There are only 24 pages to print out for this pattern which is great for anyone who does not enjoy cutting and pasting pdfs like me.
- I love that it has the flat fell details as that will look particularly great with a contrast thread. I chose to use the same colored thread in this specific project.
Additional notes for new sewists:
- It may be a slight challenge for beginner sewers especially if this is the first time making flat felled seams. The good news is the pattern instructions provides a video link to make it easier!
My process
I graded between sizes as my waist is a size 12 and hips are a size 16 for this pattern’s size chart. In order to get the wrap skirt effect, I extended the waist front skirt panel by 3 inches and drew a diagonal line to meet the original bottom of the skirt (pictured below).
Once I got to the fitting stage of sewing the skirt, I decided to redo the diagonal line so there was a more obvious slit in the skirt. Instead of adding the buttons down the skirt, I added an additional button on the waistband only. I think it will be cute paired with tights, too.
Fabric Choice
I used a stretch denim and chose a rust color. I mean, how gorgeous is this color? It screams fall doesn’t it? I thought it was a perfect way to start off my fall projects. It was 65% polyester, 32% cotton, and 3% spandex. I bought it from my local fabric store.
Styling
This can be styled in endless ways but because it is still quite warm where I live, I chose to pair it with my Shoreline Boatneck top (aff link) I made a few months ago. Once it get cold, I will be pairing it with tights and warmer tops such as a turtleneck. I hope you enjoyed my project.
Happy Sewing!
