Subtitle for this post – The Evolution of my Hair. Cause if you’ve ever visited this blog before I ‘m sure you’ve noticed it’s WAY different!)
Hey y’all – today we’re taking a break from Kids Clothes Week (which is good since I can’t show you all the Pattern Anthology stuff I’m sewing right now – but soon, I promise!) while I’m a stop on the GoTo Patterns Tour.
I have professed my love for the Casual Lady Pattern before, in the one I made for this post. And that was before I did any serious haircutting (and looking at this frizz, the curls are kind of out of control). So in addition to wearing a cute Casual Lady, I had hair that hung well past my bust last April. Which of course you can’t tell in this photo since it’s behind my back. But trust me, it was pretty long.
And then during the Sundress Series in June, I cut quite a bit off my hair, but by this picture in September (snapped by Marissa at Sewing Summit) It was just a little past my shoulders and much curlier.
And yes – I’m wearing my Casual Lady dress there. I panicked about wardrobe the day before leaving for Sewing Summit, and what better to quickly sew up than a Casual Lady? It took under two hours and then I was back to packing.
And two weeks ago I got the urge to chop again, so now I’m sporting this look with my Casual Lady:
Yup, chopped it all off. To answer the frequently asked questions –
- yes, I love it.
- No it wasn’t scary – I actually do this around every 5 years or so. The first time was right after my wedding before heading out on our honeymoon. The second time was around 2003, and then again shortly after Tater was born. So I’m due again.
- Yes, the hubs likes my hair short – he didn’t want me to do it the first time, but has since said he prefers it shorter.
- Will I keep it this way? Probably not for long – I’ll grow it out again, and my hair grows fast. I’d say it’s already 1/4″ longer than the day I cut it.
- Do I straighten it now? No, it’s still curly, but my kind of curls need length to form, so when it’s this short it actually looks a lot straighter.
But back to the dress! I bought this ruffle fabric at Michael Levine during LA Fabric Weekend, and I intended to make a skirt like this one with it when I bought it. But then in that panic of packing, well, I saw this fabric and it was meant to be.
I think it looks super cute over leggings, and the ruffles and the fit actually do a great job of camouflaging my mom belly, which, run as I might I still have. Plus I didn’t have to hem it since the bottom ruffle takes care of that. Win!
Thanks to Andrea of GoTo Patterns for letting me be part of this tour!

I admit I’ve seen some snaps of your ruffle casual lady and it makes me consider snagging the ruffle fabric in my stash every time! Very cute. I like the hair cut, I chop mine on a similar rotation. My 4 yr. old and I were looking at his one year pic.s where my hair is a bit longer than your short cut (it’s midback currently) and he was mighty confused by the whole thing. It makes me think my next chop might be traumatic on the little people!

Lovely dress – perfect with the belt. And I love your hair! I am planning on cutting mine short for the first time ever, been pinning and pinning different looks on pinterest getting ready to take the leap. You’re an inspiration!

Melly, I love the hair cut. I have hair like yours. When short it’s pretty straight but when it’s long it is curly. One year my hair was so long that when it was wet it reached almost to my waist but not quite. When it was dry, it sat on my shoulders. That was in the 90’s. Now I have my hair really short because I got the blonde color cut off Monday. My hair is very gray and since I am now a grandmother to 5, I decided to live with the gray/white hair.

I commented on this yesterday when it appeared for Thursday’s entry and as I see it again I can honestly say that I have never seen a simple haircut make someone look so beautiful.
