Have y’all seen the envelope clutch sew along that See Kate Sew has been doing? If not, you must check it out here. There’s a FREE pattern.
It’s a quick sew that requires very little fabric (2 fat quarters), and the pattern is deceptively simple. Why deceptive? Well, all those angles perfectly arranged aren’t as easy to replicate as you would think. And how do I know?
I totally altered my pattern.
It’s adorable, and great, but the thing is, I’m a pretty tiny person. And the finished clutch is about the size of a sheet of paper. Which looks out of proportion with me.
So I made mine letter envelope sized.
Did you realize I have tiny baby hands? It’s true. My ring size is 3. No that’s not a typo. So you can see why I had to miniaturize this clutch.
I was going to show you how I did it, but like I said, deceptively simple pattern. The how to is actually rather complicated, and the pictures don’t help explain things very well, so I’ll give you a quick summary and skip them. I cut 2 inches off each side of the finished rectangle (the dotted lines on the pattern), then moved the flaps in, and used a lot, a LOT of tape, and then evened up the outside angles with the pieces I cut off and redid the notches for the seams and…somewhere in there gave up on the idea of showing you how to do it.
Told you it was complicated.
At any rate I am delighted with my tiny clutch.
I bought the fabrics for it at Quiltcon last weekend (don’t worry, I’ll be sharing a post about that soon) and it was so hard to choose because it was fat quarter city in there. I had about 50 different favorites before I finally chose these two.
The button was from Hobby Lobby – I wish I could say it was some cool vintage find or something, but it’s not.
It’s the perfect size to hold the essentials – phone, chapstick, keys and sunglasses.
All buttoned safely inside.

Love this! Will you be offering us the pattern of the smaller version?? The original rocks, but like you I am a small lady who would look a bit odd carrying around such a large clutch. <3 Plus, you crack me up.

Wow, I went to See Kate Sew and you are right…that is one large clutch! I like it, but it is a bit large. Love your little version.

Cute! That button does have a vintage flair but none of the guilt of using it and risking it getting damaged.

Love your version. It’s the perfect size. 🙂 (and size 3 fingers! Wow!)
