Today I’m going to show you how I refashioned my 1990s grunge men’s flannel into something more presentable in 2013.
I started by carefully cutting off the sleeves.
Then I tried on the shirt inside out, and with chalk, marked my shoulder points, bust, and hip.
Then I used the measuring tape on each line and marked how much I would need to take out of the shirt. I based this on my body measurements plus about 2 1/2 inches for each one.
Using those marks, I drew out the curve I wanted to cut off the side.
I also curved the shoulder so that the seam wouldn’t hang off me.
On the hem, I took 4 inches off in the front, and 3 in the back (I like a little more coverage in the rear), following the curve of the shirt.
After sewing the side seams back up, I decided it needed something more. So I trimmed off the collar.
I lay the shirt on paper and traced the neckline.
This is what I came up with.
But, I didn’t want the collar to lie perfectly flat, I wanted it to roll a little, so it didn’t look like such an add-on piece. So I put it back on the paper and marked the shoulder seam on the neckline, and marked 1 inch above the shoulder seam on the armhole edge.
Then I rotate the front part of the shirt so that the shoulder seam fell between my two marks and I retraced the neckline.
As you can see from the picture below, this flattened out the neck curve of the collar a little bit. I added a seam allowance to the outside edge of the collar only, because I planned to attach the neck edge with bias tape.
I cut two collars on the fold and sewed them together around the outside edge, turned them right side out, and pressed. I made some 1/4″ double fold bias tape. (If you haven’t used this tutorial to make bias tape, you definitely should! I got 3 1/2 yards out of a 12 inc square, and I only had to sew 2 seams).
I pinned the collar to the neckline and basted. Because this shirt has a placket, I chose to have the collar end at the edge of the placket, to avoid weird overlapping in the center.
Then applied the bias tape.
After that, all I had to do was sew the sleeves back in and finish the hem, and then pose with my cool tote from Caila Made.

I wish I had the skills to do that! I have a flannel just sitting in my closet that was my dads until I stole it- I wore it all thru the 90’s, and much to my husbands chagrin, I still wear it (usually only inside the house) when its cold. I need to keep practicing at sewing so I can try something like that to give the flannel a new life. 🙂

This re-fashion is so cute. Re- Drawing the shirt seems very easy for you. I have got very admiration. Then, this shirt is so elegant and feminine. I fall in love with the grey collar but I don’t understand where is the difference between your two draws.
Thank you for sharing
