We’re kicking off hat week today with a rain hat – we’ve had rain all week here. And my sister-in-law has been giving me grief about the fact that both Tater and I have rain gear in my car, but Bean has nothing. Not that I’ve made him walk in the rain or anything, but still…yeah, I should do something about that.
So I did – I used the last tiny scrap of laminated cotton I had left from the Hound Dog Backpack and made this hat.
I used the Let’s Go Fishing hat pattern from Sewing for Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe. But then I didn’t do the exposed seams, because I didn’t think that would look good with the laminate. The inside is soft cotton knit, and I basically made two hats, sewed them together inside out around the brim and turned them right side out through a hole I left in the crown of the lining. I blind stitched my hole shut and presented Bean with his hat.
I just love that he’s so happy when he gets to do a photo shoot.
Because I constructed the hat differently, the brim is about 1/4″ less wide than if I had followed the instructions to the letter. But I think it works fine.
If you don’t have the sewing for boys book, Oliver + S has a free bucket hat pattern here, that would work just as well – just construct the outside of laminated cotton.
Now I just need to make the boy a raincoat!

awww… what a cute little hat! I just made my son a ‘conductor’s cap’ this weekend. At least your tater will keep it on for more than a minute!

I love hats! I have made several different styles – both summer and winter. I haven’t used much laminate fabric yet – after seeing this, I think I will!

Love the hat!! I’ve been meaning to do this for my son too. And the raincoat… we ended up buying a raincoat since I hadn’t made one for the last two years that I’ve been saying I was gonna…. I also love the houndstooth. I know you are a TX fan, but being a Bama fan, I have to say it does remind me of Coach Bear Bryant and would look awesome at a Bama game… 😉

That is exactly what I thought. What a cute BAMA hat!! Well, Coach Bryant did coach in Texas… at A & M.
