Hey y’all – today I’m sharing a project I made from the book Just For You (affiliate link). Just for you is a book of sewing projects broken up by month; there are 2 for every month.
When Caroline and Sarah, the book authors, first contacted me about sending me the book so I could sew along with one of the looks, I was glad to see this one – I mean lace + chiffon? What’s not to love? This project was designed by Disney of Ruffles and Stuff.
But have you ever sewn one of those projects that should have been super easy and then took about 3 times as long as it should have? Yeah, that was this skirt. NOT because of the book instructions, which are perfectly clear, but because I didn’t follow them. My bad. I kept trying to take shortcuts that ended up taking me much, much longer than if I had just done it the way I was instructed to. Good thing the final result was worth it!
Though the book calls for 4 layers of chiffon, I only did 3 because I only had 3 laces I wanted to use. I also ended up making my skirt shorter than the one shown in the book, mostly because I made it longer to begin with then didn’t like the length on myself. Skirt lengths are so particular to your own body, so I love that sewing let’s you customize to what is flattering on YOU!
And then I wasn’t quite sure how to style the skirt for these photos (taken by the lovely Miranda of One Little Minute) but since the antique lace put me in mind of grandma’s closet, I decided to go a little granny chic with the whole outfit and added my beat up ankle boots (which literally lost a boot heel right after this shoot – they had a good run, but after more years than I can remember it was time for a new pair), a cropped, belted sweater, and my staple convertible leather bag from this post.
And there are a whole bunch more projects in the book, ranging from clothing to accessories. There’s a color blocked T-shirt that I really like, for example. You can browse and buy Just For You here (affiliate link)Â and check out Sew Can She for more inspiration.
