While I love the current off the shoulder top trend, I have a love/hate relationship with the whole romper/jumpsuit trend. So today for my friend Melissa’s summer sewing series, I present my solution to that whole issue – separates sewn in the same fabric.
See, while I can totally get on board with throwing on one piece and being done (hence my love of dresses) I am a grown a$$ woman and I just can’t do the whole strip to go to the bathroom thing. In a romper, you have to take the top off to get the bottom off, not just lift your skirt like in a dress. It’s the same reason I don’t do one piece bathing suits – who wants to be topless just because they had to pee?
So here is my compromise to fashion and trends – I sewed up this off the shoulder top and a pair of shorts in a matching fabric. So it kind of looks like a romper, but I only have to pull down the bottoms to go to the restroom.
This top is actually a modification of my Sutton Dress from my book Sundressing, with thanks to Caroline for giving me the idea. The only thing I changed from how she did hers was to lengthen the ruffle slightly to take advantage of the full border of this embroidered fabric. I picked this fabric up as a remnant in a Dallas warehouse, so I apologize that I can’t point you toward more of this awesomeness.
And the shorts? These are from my FREE boxer shorts pattern; I just lengthened them a little and added the side seam pockets from this dress. Visit those posts to get the pattern details and pieces. And I actually think I’m going to shorten these; with the border print, lengthening seemed like a good idea but I think I’d be happier with the fit if they were about 2 inches shorter – basically the same as the original pair.

That’s super cute. I love the color and print on it.
