Hey y'all - today you get a two-fer, yay! I've got a SUPER simple dress tutorial to share with you, and it comes with a free girls dress pattern.
Want to make your own? You'll need
- About 3/4 yard of fabric and 2 1/2 yds of 1/2" wide double fold bias tape. Those are approximate numbers because I used scraps to make mine. Want to make your own bias tape? See this tutorial.
- You have two choices to download the pattern.
- Subscribe to the Melly Sews Weekly Newsletter. AFTER you sign up, you’ll get a confirmation email – and you have to confirm or my email service can’t send you the free pattern. But once you do confirm, you’ll get access to not just this but several other free patterns. Woot!
- Download the pattern through Craftsy (affiliate link). If you aren’t a member of Craftsy you will be asked to sign up in order to access the pattern.
(PS – if you have trouble finding either your confirmation email or the email with the pattern link, try checking your spam, trash, junk, bulk, social and/or promotional email tabs or folders. Free pattern links are also included in every weekly newsletter; these go out on Friday afternoons. Due to the number of subscribers I can’t email pattern links to individuals.)
Please note that all my patterns are licensed for personal use only (no selling items made from this without a limited production license) and by downloading you are agreeing to this license.
This pattern is a size 3T. If you need to make the pattern bigger or smaller, check out this post.
PLEASE NOTE - before you start cutting your fabric you're going to need to extend the pattern pieces. To do that, lay a ruler alongside the line of the pattern piece and continue the lines at the same angles down to your desired length. See the diagram below.
Sew bias tape along the front and back necklines. Don't know how to sew bias tape on? See this tutorial.
Place the front and the back right sides together and sew down the side seams. Finish these seams. Don't know how to finish seams? See this post.
Cut 2 pieces of bias tape 33" long. Find the center of one piece and match it to the side seam, then pin the tape. Stitch as you did for the neck bias tape.
When sewing your bias tape over the seam (the second pass of stitching) sew all the way down to the ends of the straps to close all raw edges inside. At the very end of the straps you'll want to fold the short end in about 1/4" and stitch across. Or if you're lazy you can just tie the strap in a knot at the very end.
Hem the bottom edge of the dress by turning 1/2" to the wrong side twice and stitching.
Tie bows in the straps, and it's ready for your little miss to wear!
