Hey y’all. If you follow me on Instagram you know that I spent a crazy 24 hours moving my sewing studio on New Year’s Day. I finally have the pictures of the new sewing room ready to share. This is going to be a picture heavy and word short post.
BTW, if you don’t remember my old studio, I show it in this post. And there was nothing wrong with it space wise. But I moved for a few reasons. First, this room was designed as the formal living room in our house. So it was the first thing you see when you walk in. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but we had run into issues with playdates and other children not knowing to leave things alone in there (I have mine well-trained). So moving upstairs gave me a door to shut.
But the primary reason was light and temperature. The old studio is the coldest room in our house, being on the north corner, and also the shadiest – it never gets any direct sunlight between the oak trees out front and the neighbor’s house on the side. The room I moved to is south facing and above the tree line – which means it gets great light and it’s warmer. And since I’m cold natured and constantly taking blog photos, that is a big deal to me. Plus I painted the new sewing room white, which also helps bounce all the light around.
Here’s what the room looked like before – except all those boxes were inside the closet. I didn’t take a picture until after the hubs had started moving boxes out. Whoops. But you can see it was basically an office/library/workout room.
And cleared out. A pretty green (we painted it this color when we moved in 10 years ago) but not the white I wanted.
And now it looks like this.
Find out more about the thread rack here.
And in case you’re wondering what happened to the old studio, well it’s a library/office/playroom now.

Looks great Melissa! Great idea to store your sewing labels in the tins on a magnetic strip. I might just have to try that. Just curious – Did the old Mint walls give your pictures a green tinge or was it not really noticeable? I’m waffling between the palest mint and the palest teal, but my room also happens to be in the basement so white may be my only option if I want to take decent pictures.

Tell me about the thread spools hanger. Did you make it? Thanx, and congrats on a very nice sewing room!

What a wonderful space!

I have to admit I’m kinda excited to see that you have a textured walls. We moved last year and our old house has textured walls ALL OVER! It’s driving me nuts, because I wasn’t sure if I could make it work with more modern styling. Thanks for giving me hope! 🙂

This space looks deluxe!!! My house is tiny so I get a corner…. I love my corner but it’s no deluxe. Congrats on the move!

Lovely room and you just gave me a good idea to stash fabrics. I’ve moved from my shop with a small work space (mini kitchen) to a top floor room in my house. I’m having lighting issues still, but I’m working on those ; it’s been only a month since I started working from my new space.
My shop had the exact same mint colour as your walls now ; it’s not only a fab colour but gives you the impression of always being in a fresh and sunlighted room. Even on cloudy days!
Enjoy your new space !

Wow, your new space looks so neat and organized! My studio usually looks like a bomb went off. My current challenge: interfacing. How do you organize it with all of the different weights and sizes of scraps yet still identify which one it is since some look so similar?

I have found that if you keep it in a gallon size zip bag you can label it. That keeps it clean and together and you put it in a drawer sick it on a shelf. Or put it in a basket.

I’m envious and I’ve started to collect inspiration on Pinterest for my much needed sewing room makeover. I’m surprised that you don’t have a bigger fabric stash. I have made a vow to sew through as much of mine before buying anymore. Wish me luck.
Love it!

What great space. Inspiring me to get busy straightening out my space. I am in a room above the garage and it is SO COLD; with no heat except 2 space heaters. I have the luxury of space but tend to pile stuff everywhere. Need more shelving is my observation after looking at your great wall unit!!!

I have been looking for inspiration for my sewing room and you have given it to me. I have almost 40 years of accumulated stuff and lots of duplicate materials/tools. You have shown me how to trim it down to just what I need to enjoy my sewing and crafting again. . Its amazing how we think that having a lot frees us, but its really just the opposite. Minimalism frees our minds to imagine on its own. Thank you

Oh I am so in the same boat! I have been sewing for ….well my oldest is 35 so when I was pregnant with her lol. I have stuff everywhere! I have two extra rooms but every time I go to fix one up for ME one of the three kids HAVE to move back home 🙁 This time I am getting it done! Now to get all the other stuff sorted and out and do the fixing, painting and all the fun stuff! WHILE trying to sew in the same room! I bet I have at least two of everything! And I have material and patterns stashed EVERYWHERE!
