Tech Tip: How to Follow WordPress Blogs With Google Friend Connect

techtipbutton

If you read my Slice of Life post last Sunday, or if you happened upon glitches in my site, you know I just completed a transfer of my Blogger blog to WordPress. I won’t go into the reasons why I did it, or the way I did it yet – I’ll save that for another post. Because today I want to share a tip for those who still love their Google Friend Connect (as I do – that’s still my preferred blog following method).

Did you know you can follow WordPress blogs with GFC? Even now, after the whole “they took GFC away from non-google sites” thing? You can! Easy as 1, 2, 3

1. Go to the wordpress site you want to follow, and copy the homepage URL address – that’s the one without just the blog name and .com or .net or whatever. (For example, mine is http://mellysews.com)

2. In your Dashboard, look for the Add button.

3. Paste the URL in the box and add   /feed  to the end of the address and hit follow!

I discovered this trick long before I personally switched to WordPress, and so I’ve never had an issue following all the blogs that switched before I did.  It works 90% of the time – once in a while it doesn’t work, and that’s usually because the blog in question has a different address for their feed. When it works, you’ll see the recent posts from that blog immediately. If it doesn’t you’ll get an error message, and in that case you’ll need to look for their RSS button and use that URL instead.

I love adding blogs this way too!!! A lot of times I find the rss button doesn’t work or a blog doesn’t have a place on their sidebar to click “follow” – my reader is jam packed with great blogs and it makes it easy if I am looking for a specific tutorial just to search through my reader and find a DIY from one of the other ladies I already follow! :)
