A Boys Button Shoulder Shirt

We took family photos on Thanksgiving (which I will share next week) and Tater didn’t have a solid colored shirt to wear. So I whipped one up, with a design I’ve had in mind for a while. I modified a t-shirt pattern with facings so that it has working buttons at the shoulders.

It worked well for family pictures, and I love that it’s very different from most of what I’m seeing in stores. But I think I still want to do some tweaking before I write it up either as a pattern or tutorial.

Without pants pockets, I had a hard time trying to get Tater to act naturally for the camera. (Mental note: always make Tater wear pants with pockets for future photo shoots).

So now that he’s getting old enough to be more aware of the camera he has that “what do I do with my hands” syndrome, and these pictures are all a little a-w-k-w-a-r-d. Also, for some reason in these pictures I’m seeing a big Joseph Gordon-Levitt resemblance. Mostly in the eyes. What do you think?

  1. Melly, I really enjoy seeing what new ideas you come up with for simple but better-than-store-bought styles for clothes, purses, backpacks, and everything. When I have kids, I hope I have the time to sew for them as well as you do! (I also think Tater looks like a mini-Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and have since I started reading your blog.)

    Keep up the good work!

  2. I just made Cai the O+S sailboat top with big huge buttons and I just still can’t decide how I feel about it. I like it, but shirts like this are really different from the norm… usually I like that! I like your shirt better than mine though! :)

  3. I really love this shirt. There are so many fun things you could do with different button/fabric combinations. Also, I totally see the Joseph Gordon-Levitt resemblance. Lucky boy!

  4. Hah, except I drool over JGL (and have since 10 Things I Hate About You), and I just think, “Aww, cute kid,” when I see your Tater! :)

  5. Oh my gosh, totally little JGL! I love me some JGL. and Tater.

  6. Love the detail on this! Fabulous. Really.

  7. He is so handsome. very cool top.

  8. I love this shirt. We have actually been working on one that buttons only on one shoulder. Still some tweaking before that is ready as well. Thanks for sharing today.
