Earth Day Take One

As I mentioned in my Fields of Gold Dress post, that dress was actually the third look I made for Earth Day. Here are my sketches:

Do you see the problem with look 1? Yes, it strongly resembles A Little Gray’s Piece by Piece Skirt from the Week 1 Challenge. I had already sewn this skirt before the week 1 looks were posted, so I had no idea, but once I saw hers I knew I had to rethink my Earth Day look.

Anyways, here is the finished version of my first outfit – and I’m glad I redid it. It’s totally cute and wearable, but it’s just not PR&P wow! I don’t think. Plus I never really figured out a name for it, and naming all the others has been fairly easy, so that should have been a sign to me too.

I used two denim skirts and a t-shirt to make this one, and you can see the t-shirt got my first try at the smocking technique I ultimately used. My original idea was a vintage concert t-shirt, but I couldn’t find one that I liked.

Of course my model couldn’t be happier – she got two outfits out of the deal!

There was one other look – for Tater – which still needs work, but I plan to share it eventually. Come back Wednesday for the smocking tutorial, and of course on Friday you get to see my look for the Color Challenge on PR&P.

  1. Love it! I pinned it and I can’t wait to make one for my daughter and one for myself!

  2. really cute! I think the chevron look turned out great with the denim material. Did you use the t-shirt to line the skirt and make the waistband?

    • Thanks! No, the skirt is unlined – I serged the seams and then topstitched them to make them lay flat. The waistband is denim as well, with a zipper and button.

  3. I find the skirt beautiful, you made a very good work!

  4. You seriously are amazing Melissa!! I love this!
