My Sewing Space

I’ve been meaning to do this post for a while, not because I think my sewing space is the most awesome, (certainly not as good as this one) but because I like the peek into where people create.  And I say sewing space since my space is actually part of 2 rooms. Above, you can see that I share the playroom (which is supposed to be a formal living room) with my boys. Below is the other part of my space – the dining room, where I draft and cut.
The two spaces are across our entryway from each other. This shot is from inside the dining room.
Want to see more specifics? Let’s do the dining room first. As you can see I have my ironing board in there, and stuff spread all over the table.
The china cabinet in the corner holds our once used china, and more sewing supplies.
Inside – user manuals, stabilizers for my embroidery machine, heat ‘n bond, and shipping supplies. And crystal platters of course. Who doesn’t store their crystal with their stabilizers?
In one of the drawers, I have the nice dinner linens. In the other, I have snaps, buttons, extra labels & business cards (that I never hand out, I’m terrible about that) spray adhesive, dye, extra rotary blades and other random sewing supplies.
On the floor next to it I store my cardboard mat (used mostly for rub-off patterning), a posterboard (for white photo backgrounds), a roll of kraft paper for patterning/drafting, and my cutting mat when it’s not on the table.
Let’s go across the way

Serger

Out of the 25 cubes in this storage shelf, my boys get 3, and I get the other 22. Seems a little unbalanced, but in my defense, the room and the cubes were all mine before they came along. Let’s take a closer look at what I’m doing with my 22 cubes.
Fabric storage.  I’m trying to whittle this stash down with projects. And with a resolution not to go to the fabric store this month (although I may have to bend the rules since Project Run and Play announced one more week of the Sew Along contest. And since I have decided to enter Sew-vivor)
More fabric on top. I store my seamless photo paper behind the Van Gogh print.

Embroidery and serger thread; sewing thread is in the machine’s cabinet

Two handmade totes. The one on the left is now used to store patterns. The one on the right is made from the first yarn I ever spun myself, and some gift yarn a lovely lady brought me from South America, and it’s holding some of my yarn stash (which used to be bigger than my fabric stash).

A fabric covered shoebox is the perfect size to hold ziploc bags that store the patterns I draft myself and PDF patterns that have been printed out.

Knitting books on the left and sewing books on the right.

Want to look through some of my storage bins?
This one is full of roving, a bobbins, and a niddy noddy to wind yarn. Once upon a time, BK (before kids) I spun my own yarn. Someday I will do so again.
So yeah, this isn’t entirely decorative, it was actually used regularly in the BK era.
I have two bins full of sewing patterns.
Three more bins are full of scrap fabric and clothes for repurposing.

And another bin full of trims and trim scraps.
And behind my chair in the corner, my spare sewing machine. Because every girl needs one. (Hey, at least I’m down to one – I have a hard time passing up these vintage machines. Between my mom and I at one point we owned 6. We’re down to 4 now. Progress.)
So that’s my sewing space – I hope you’ve enjoyed the tour.

  1. I love it! at this point I am sharing a sewing space with my hubby’s home office, and he had taken up beer brewing, so it’s all crammed into one room! I am slowly moving the playroom around so I can have a nice little space for myself! I can only hope my husband doesn’t take it upon himself to include his brew ware in my “safe sewing haven”. Thanks for the peek at your sewing room!

  2. I love the way you covered your desk chair. Over my sewing career, I’ve sewn on the kitchen table and in the cold, damp basement. I’m finally fortunate to have a dedicated sewing room. I totally lucked out and found some old library furniture @ Restore. All the pieces together totaled under $500. I just posted about it last week. You might like to look at it on my blog? http://joysjotsshots.blogspot.com/2012/02/after-hurricane-christmas-2011-sewing.html

I’m really enJOYing your site. As you will see, your site is one on my blog list.

  3. Love it! I too use the dining room table for my stuff! I’m lucky enough for it to be right next to my little corner of the house that holds my sewing machines and wall of sewing stuff (as the hubby calls it) I am trying to become more organized, and I think I just need more bins to hide it all in! lol Thanks for sharing, you can see some of mine over here at my blog

  4. You have a great space. My space is currently a tiny nook in the laundry room so I am indeed jealous. Sharing it with the kids is great too because they like to be with you, at least mine do, they always follow me into my tiny nook.

  15. I love your sewing space, i just wish i could get mine situated as good as yours is… my special, Autistic grandson just took my sewing room over for his bedroom, which i gladly gave him… he is to special to say no too. It’s the 2nd bedroom anyway… Also he is finally staying the night with me now… I would give him the world if I could… but he helped me sew his mothers apron for her birthday… which is today… he was so excited to give it to her… I would never take the room from him but i will make half of it mine… I envy yours & love it too… thanks for sharing it with us all…
